Description
Areas of Study:
The scholarships are open to all fields of study. However, they do not support programs that involve medical practice.
Requirements:
- A completed bachelor's degree by the time of application for the scholarship. If the study goal is a PhD, the bachelor's degree must be from a program lasting 4 or more years. Students who have completed a 3-year bachelor's program must have an additional year of higher education at the master's or postgraduate level. If the study goal is a master's degree, a 3-year bachelor's degree is accepted.
- A bachelor's degree average of 14 or higher (preferred condition).
- Excellent English proficiency, demonstrated by TOEFL IBT scores of 100 or higher or IELTS scores of 7 or higher. These exams must have been taken within the last 5 years.
Selection Process:
- Evaluation of academic curriculum and study objectives.
- Interview.
Benefits:
- Funding up to USD $25,000 for the first year of study. Additional funding may be available for the second year (master’s and PhD) and the third year (PhD), not exceeding $6,000 per year.
- Organization and administration of the application processes to U.S. universities, including financial aid applications.
- Health and accident insurance during the scholarship period.
- Issuance of necessary documents for the J-1 visa.
- Waiver of visa fees.
- Pre-departure orientation for the U.S.
- Ongoing support from the Fulbright Commission and the Institute of International Education during the stay in the U.S.
- Opportunities to participate in seminars and other cultural and scientific activities organized by the Fulbright Program during the scholarship stay, subject to funding availability.
Eligibility Conditions:
Only candidates who meet the following criteria are eligible:
- Hold Portuguese nationality.
- Have not previously benefited from a Fulbright Program scholarship.
- Have not resided in the U.S. for 5 years or more in the 6 years preceding the scholarship application.
- Do not hold dual Portuguese and U.S. nationality.
- Do not hold a U.S. permanent residency (green card).
- Do not have a valid U.S. visa between the time of the scholarship application and the start of the stay in the U.S.
