The Mandume Ya Ndemufayo University (UMN) has a binary nature, characterized by the integration of higher education and polytechnic institutions within its structure, with a unified organization aimed at training higher-level professionals and researchers in various fields of scientific knowledge.

The UMN is part of the 6th academic region, covering the provinces of Huíla, Namibe, Cunene, and Cuando-Cubango, with its headquarters in the city of Lubango, Huíla Province.

The mission of the UMN is to produce and disseminate knowledge to form qualified citizens and professionals, committed to the sustainable development of Angola, specifically emphasizing:

- Human, cultural, scientific, and technical education;

- The realization of fundamental and applied research;

- The preservation and enhancement of its scientific, cultural, artistic, and natural heritage;

- Cooperation with society in its academic region and the country in general, from a perspective of mutual value enhancement;

- Cultural, scientific, and technical exchange with similar national and international institutions;

- Contributing to international cooperation and promoting closer ties between peoples, with particular emphasis on Portuguese-speaking countries and SADC nations.

The UMN is structured into organic units (Faculties, Institutes, and Schools), which are further organized into teaching and research departments where various undergraduate (bachelor's) courses and specialties in different areas of scientific knowledge are offered.
