World Bank Invests 500 Million Dollars in Higher Education in Angola

The World Bank (WB) is supporting an Angolan Government project aimed at strengthening skills in higher education, with a total investment of US$500 million. The first phase of this project, called the Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Development Project (TEST), was recently launched in Luanda.

The Minister of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation of Angola, Maria do Rosário Bragança, highlighted that higher education is a strategic pillar for the development of a more prosperous and equitable society. She emphasized the importance of empowering individuals with the tools they need to innovate, create and lead.

The BM representative in Angola, Juan Carlos Alvarez, mentioned that this is the first time that the international financial institution has invested in Angolan higher education, in a project that will be developed in several phases over ten years. He also highlighted the partnership with the Global Partnership for Education, which is financing the operation with a donation of US$50 million.

TEST is structured in three phases: the first with an investment of US$ 150 million, the second with US$ 175 million and the third with another US$ 175 million, totaling US$ 500 million.

This investment aims to improve and expand the teacher training sector in Angola, improve the quality of programs in strategic priority areas and strengthen governance in the educational system, benefiting more than 150,000 higher education students, including teacher training institutions.
