Promoting Education and Student Mobility Among Lusophone Countries

On October 18, 2024, the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) celebrated the awarding of 50 scholarships under the Lusofonia+ Program, aimed at promoting education among youth from Portuguese-speaking countries.
The ceremony featured the presence of the CPLP Executive Secretary, Zacarias da Costa, who highlighted the significance of this program. He stated that these scholarships offer not just academic opportunities but also a commitment to building a sustainable future among Portuguese-speaking nations.
Zacarias da Costa emphasized that the Lusofonia+ Program seeks to establish strong ties between CPLP countries, fostering innovation and development. "Education is a fundamental right and essential for the prosperity of our peoples," he noted, further underlining the importance of student and researcher mobility, as outlined in the CPLP's Strategic Cooperation Plan for 2022-2026.
UTAD's rector, Emídio Gomes, reaffirmed the university's role in integrating and supporting the Lusophone community, praising the diversity and inclusion of students from the CPLP. The university aims to be a welcoming and respectful space, focusing on valuing students as its primary asset.
The Lusofonia+ Program was conceived as a solidarity initiative, with the collaboration of private and public entities financing the education of students from countries such as Angola, Brazil, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Timor-Leste, and others. Partner companies, including Continental and Dourogás GNV, played a crucial role in enabling these scholarships, which cover both undergraduate and master's courses.
This joint effort reflects the CPLP's commitment to investing in the talent and training of young people, promoting a future of collaboration and mutual growth among Lusophone nations.
Conclusion
The awarding of scholarships by UTAD clearly signifies the importance of education in fostering cooperation among CPLP countries. This program not only supports academic training but also symbolizes the hope for a more united and innovative future for all involved.
